I had been meaning to pick up meals from Gastro Gnome for quite some time, and I finally ordered Gastro Gnome Peach Cobbler for the summer set of reviews.
Gastro Gnome is a small company out of Bozeman, Montana.

Their shopping boxes are indeed cute.

I love cobblers and crisps, and I rarely pass up the chance to review them when freeze-dried food companies offer them.
Priced at $15.75, this isn’t a frugal dessert. It is, however, for two people to share, so that levels the price. But then, if you are 50 miles out, dessert becomes something you are willing to pay for. But it better be worth it.

I was a bit concerned when I opened the package and saw huge chunks. This doesn’t play well with rehydration. Part of me wanted to crumble them up (I do this for savory meals if I see chunks, breaking them up helps a lot).

I followed the directions and stirred it halfway through.
The finished product was not appetizing-looking. I get it: cobbler isn’t an easy thing to do freeze-dried, it’s going to be a hot mess. The large chunks were still there. Still hard.
But then I smelled it. The aroma was of “wet dog”. I asked Kirk to smell it – he smells differently from me. His view was that it had no real smell. It should have smelled of peaches, of cinnamon. Maybe I was picking up on the almond flour? I do not know.
I took a bite, and it tasted so awful I spit it out. Kirk tried a bite and bit down on a very hard piece of what seemed to be a peach. Hard enough that it made his teeth hurt from biting down. It was this hard piece – was it a chunk of pit? I couldn’t tell. The big chunks did NOT rehydrate properly, even after 15 minutes.
And I will be blunt: I always try to find a positive in anything I review – but with this one, I could not. It doesn’t smell good, nor taste good. The texture is weird, congealed, and lumpy, and finding a hard bite was not cool. It’s up there with a bone in your dinner or a hair on your salad. I cannot get past that.
I do NOT recommend this dessert. If you are going to sell a product at a “premium price,” it had better deliver a premium product. Maybe I just got a bad run?
There are better options out there if you are looking for a peach cobbler – and it costs far less: (Peak Refuel Peach Cobbler)
