I had wondered when I would pass paying $20.00 for a backpacking freeze-dried meal.
Well…..
We went way past that, all the way to $28.00.
Yes.
$28.00
But let us talk about this, though. And how it might be worth it. Well, mostly worth it.

We picked up a Luxefly Basecamp Filet Mignon Beef Stroganoff meal, and yes, it was $28.00. Much of the cost is the beef it contains – actual large pieces of filet mignon. You are not buying a cheap hamburger that has pea or soy protein added.

It is a 1-serving bag: 610 calories, 39 grams of protein, and 940 mg of sodium.

The filet is ample in size.
I added the full amount of water called for (8 to 12 ounces) and found it worked perfectly. They say 5 minutes, I tested it at 5 and went for 10 minutes. In cold weather or at a higher altitude, you might need 15 minutes. As always, results will vary.

The finished meal.
It is a lot of food. A lot of meat and mushrooms. Delicious. It is NOT salty or pasty (like a certain “classic” with the initials of the MH version is – where a smaller serving size has more than 600 mg of extra sodium).
The ingredient list is clean: Organic Cremini and Shiitake mushrooms, organic sour cream, organic beef stock (contains onions, leeks, tomatoes, carrots, celery), organic egg noodles (contains wheat, eggs), Rbst-free butter (contains milk solids), fresh organic thyme, Pinot Grigio white wine, and grass-fed filet mignon beef.
It is a satisfying dish. Meat is not cheap these days, particularly if you buy grass-fed.
Look at this meal as an indulgent treat. It is well worth it
But unless you are rolling in the cash, it’s probably a once-a-summer treat.
