It’s fall, and that has me craving heartier meals. This recipe is quick to make and will fill you up with a lot of protein, from the chicken and also the peas. A ½ cup of freeze-dried chicken is 27 grams of protein, and the peas add another 3 grams or so.
It’s a hearty serving; if you have a small appetite, you might even be able to share. Meals this size are what I used to make when my oldest was young, and he and I would share a meal.
We used freeze-dried chicken to keep the meal light. You can use a 5-ounce can of chicken breast (make sure it has a pop top for ease). Cut the water back to 1 cup, add the chicken with its broth, and then add the water.
This recipe is not high in sodium, so you may want to add salt to taste. I find the Parmesan cheese adds enough for my taste.

The Comfort Bowl
Pack in a quart freezer bag:
- ¾ cup instant rice
- ½ cup freeze-dried chicken
- ¼ cup freeze-dried green peas
- 2 Tbsp shelf-stable Parmesan cheese (green can)
- 1 Tbsp butter powder
- 1 Tbsp dry milk
- 1 tsp low-sodium chicken bouillon
One Pot Method:
Bring 1½ cups of water to a boil in a pot, add the dry ingredients, and stir.
Cover tightly and take off the stove. Let it sit for 15 minutes, stir, and enjoy. In cooler temperatures or at higher altitudes, use a pot cozy to insulate.
FBC Method:
Place the freezer bag in an FBC Cozy and add 1½ cups of boiled water, stirring well. Seal tightly and let sit for 15 minutes, stir well, and enjoy.
Serves one hearty appetite.
