Another new recipe was created out of the Clean the Hiker’s Pantry. It’s friendly to both FBC and One Pot Method, a quick recipe to pull together and cook. Freeze-dried sausage isn’t typical in trail recipes, but it should be. It’s a great source of protein and has a great salty flavor.

Sausage Rice
Ingredients:
- 1 cup instant rice
- ¼ cup freeze-dried sausage crumbles
- 1 Tbsp sour cream powder
- 1 Tbsp butter powder
- 1 Tbsp shelf-stable parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp or 1 packet low sodium beef broth powder
Also Take:
- 1 Tbsp or 1 packet olive oil
Directions:
Pack all dry ingredients in a quart freezer bag or mylar bag.
FBC Method:
Place the freezer bag in an FBC Cozy or similar. Add the oil and 1¼ cups boiled water. Stir well, seal, and let sit for 15 minutes. If using a Mylar bag, add oil and water and continue.
One Pot Method:
Add 1¼ cups water and oil to a pot and bring to a boil. Add the dry ingredients, stirring well. Cover tightly and remove the pot from the stove. Let sit for 15 minutes. In cooler temperatures or at high altitudes, use a pot cozy to insulate.
Serves 1 large appetite.
