Local Adventures: Point Hudson Breakwater Walkway

Point Hudson Breakwater Walkway is a new pathway at the far end of historic Port Townsend on the Quimper Peninsula in Washington State. It opened in the past few weeks after a multi-year rebuild of the jetty protecting Hudson Point. To see what the Port of Port Townsend have been doing, their Facebook page has a lot of posts and stories.

As I have often said, any hike is a hike. Even if it is an urban stroll on sidewalks to get where you are going, this pathway is accessible for nearly all, be it strollers or wheelchairs.

Over the past few years, we have watched the marina undergo a lot of change, including dredging and improvements to the jetties that protect that area. The last bit was the port, adding the newly made walkway on top of the jetty.

Where It Is:

To find the walkway, go to the end of Water Street, nine blocks from the Port Townsend ferry dock. The sidewalks are wide and flat, and it is a leisurely stroll from the ferry dock. If you were to drive here, parking is available on the side roads. The historic downtown is busy and far easier to walk than drive.

The Northwest Maritime Center (the Wooden Boat place) is at the end of Water Street. It is often busy, with boats being worked on and classes taught. Stroll through to the back, and you will see the pathway. It even has a coffee shop and near it a playground for young children. Along with a lot of public beaches one can stroll.

The jetty ahead. The mountains visible are the North and Central Cascade Mountains. In front is a Tsunami alert. Port Townsend is on the edge of the Salish Sea, Port Townsend Bay, and the entrance into what becomes the Puget Sound. The land across the way is Whidbey Island.

It was a beautiful day, warm and sunny, but you could see the weather shifting. Lots of people were out enjoying the sun.

The Point Hudson RV Park is to the left, on the other side of the jetty. Mt. Baker rises high above; it is the last big mountain of the Cascades. This area is mountains as far as the eyes can see, as long as you keep swinging around.

The walkway takes a right and heads out. Hard to see, Mt. Rainer rises up, over Whidbey Island, straight above the walkway. It’s the largest thing rising up.

The Olympic Mountains are to the right in the photo, rising up as you shift to the right.

The live stream is on YouTube. I was watching it, and many fish swam by before it got dark tonight.

The path turns left, and another section greets you.

Looking across the way to the other side of the jetty, with Baker rising above.

It’s not a long walk, but it is an enjoyable one.

We had made it a full day, walking to Uptown Port Townsend, visiting a favorite bakery, walking down to the water, and getting in a few miles on a pleasant spring day.

The Stairs of Thigh Distress that take you from the water to Uptown never get easier, and seem steeper by the year. Built for tiny Victorian feet, it’s always great when you reach the top!
