New Gear: The Countertop 360 Freeze Dryer

We have had a Harvest Right Large freeze-dryer since 2022 and have used it extensively. Often in ways I wasn’t expecting. If you’d like to see all our posts on creating shelf-stable food, check them out here.

This fall, Harvest Right announced an all-new freeze-dryer, designed from the ground up. It wouldn’t be big; it would be designed for the average kitchen. Most users wouldn’t need to worry about a larger, more robust electrical panel (a real issue with the Large and XL dryers, which required dedicated space).

Plug and Play.

And it would fit under the counter for most users.

But more than all of that?

Its price point is the best they have offered. $1,295. Making it an affordable luxury. One where you might say, “I could justify this.”

I know I did. I ordered it almost as soon as it was available to existing customers.

And yes, it’s coming in baby blue. Because why not. I love the color, and it’ll inspire me.

So Why Did You Get One, Sarah?

When we lived on the island, we had a dedicated spot for our Large on our shop’s electrical panel. We designed it for it, since we built the shop not long before we got our first freeze-dryer. When we moved to West Virginia, we took it with us. However, our electrical panel wasn’t ready for it here. We had a lot to do in the house, and we kept putting off that panel. Finding a trustworthy electrician isn’t easy, as many here are only working when they want (they are Boomers, semi-retired). I mean, I cannot blame them. So the new panel keeps getting put off.

So when I saw it was plug-and-play, on a standard wall plug-in….well, I jumped for it. No need to wait anymore; I can get to work.

The other is I don’t need the Large size that often. While we grow a lot of food here, it is nowhere near what I had on the island when we had a 5-acre homestead.

I want a freeze-dryer I can run with smaller loads when I have things to process. Wi-Fi capability was also attractive, so I can monitor the runs even when I am not near the machine. No wondering at 11 pm.

Now I just have to wait patiently for the freight truck to show up and get my first run through it.
