Hiking

Walking Morgan’s Grove Spring

Spring break ended on Sunday, and Monday felt like an easy hike kind of morning. One of those West Virginia mornings where the temps are rising, but first rain. We drove a few miles to Morgan’s Grove Park, which I have hiked at several times. It was feeling a bit humid, but there was a light breeze.

The last trees to bloom are often the Eastern Redbud, and they were very pretty. They are a hot pink/purple.

The trail around the park was in great shape. In late winter, the trail was extensively worked on.

It’s not a big hike, but there is always something to look at – and it is a loop. Dog friendly as well. And free to use. Sometimes that is all you need.

One of my favorite places here is the old spring house, built in 1831. When it is hot outside, step onto the edge, and the temps slide down instantly.

The water from this spring goes into Town Run, which runs through Shepherdstown, WV, to the Potomac River. On the back of the spring, the water collects in a pool, then flows into a shallow, but always running creek. There are at least 6 springs that form what is Town Run.

Town Creek is a worthy walk in town, to follow as it cuts across town – under buildings and even through back yards. It is so much fun to walk and just see the water.
