I kept seeing these meals in a cup from Good To Go in social menus ads, so I picked the variety pack to review. It was an 8 pack, with 4 varities.
While sold as microwaveable meals in a cup, they come with directions for making with hot water.
They are smaller versions of meals they sell in mylar bags, at around $5 each. You might think that’s pricey for a meal cup until you run the math.
For example, the Mushroom Risotto is 75 grams, whereas the 1 person serving mylar bag of the same meal is 95 grams. The 1-person meal is $10.75. The Pad Thai is 80 grams, 114 grams for the mylar bag. The pasta marinara is 75 grams versus 100 grams.
So shockingly, if you don’t care about the packaging, these are a pretty decent bargain for outdoor food. The mylar bag is for convenience. It keeps the dried food fresher for far longer and also makes camp prep easier. And yes, mylar bags pack far more flatter. But, if you want to save money and don’t have a huge appetite, you might consider the cups to save $.
Tip: Let these rehydrate for 15 minutes for the best texture. Rice takes time. And it will absorb more water the longer it sits.
Cuban Rice Bowl. It’s an interesting blend. It has flavor and spices, but the beans are mushy. It is gluten-free, vegetarian, and peanut-free.Pad Thai.Of the four meals, this was my favorite. While the rice noodles were chewy due to being brown rice, the sauce was very flavorful, with a hint of heat. It was a vibrant meal. It is gluten-free but does contain peanuts and soy. It also contains eggs and shrimp.Mushroom 🍄 RisottoI’ve reviewed the Mushroom Risotto before. My feelings haven’t changed on it. It’s bland to me. It needs Parmesan cheese or hot sauce. Or even black pepper. Something to liven it up. It is gluten-free, vegan, and peanut-free.Pasta Marinara.Pleasant flavor for the sauce, noodles were a bit chewy, as they are brown rice pasta, the meal is gluten-free. The boys liked it. However, it needs something more, like meat, in it. The meal is GF, vegan, and peanut-free.
The takeaway is that the meals are not bad. Being able to find gluten-free meals can be hard, so it’s a bonus. Just give them 15 minutes of sit time. And consider adding in meat if you consume it for a higher protein meal.
