Meal Review: Texas State Fair Chili

Over the years, we have reviewed many meals from PackitGourmet, but we hadn’t tried out their chili.

The Texas State Fair Chili is what I would call a stoup – it’s a soup, but is packed with ingredients to make it a hearty meal.

It is a huge serving; the meal is a “single-serving” but could easily serve two smaller appetites, especially if you pack in some hearty rolls or cornbread to enjoy with it.

Priced at $14.99, it comes in both regular and spicy versions.

It takes 14 ounces of boiled water and a 10-minute sit time. I gave mine 15 minutes, as I like to ensure the beans are fully rehydrated. It is full of beef and beans, with tortilla chips mixed in.

We enjoyed it, though it does have cumin in it for cumin haters…..It’s a good chili. Perfect for cold trips where you want to get warmed up inside.

Nutritional Stats:

The meal is high in calories, proteins (41 grams!), and fiber (21 grams is impressive). At 710 mg of sodium, most hikers can enjoy this meal.

Ingredients:

Kidney Beans, Red Beans, Ground Beef (beef, salt, beef stock, natural flavoring), Tortilla Chips (stone ground white corn, corn oil, lime), Cheddar Cheese (pasteurized milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes, annatto), Monterey Jack Cheese (pasteurized milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), Chili Spice (cumin, chili powder [chile pepper, salt, garlic, spices], paprika, chipotle, garlic), Olive Oil, Tomatoes, Spices, Masa (corn, lime), Organic Tomatoes, Red and Green Bell Peppers, Organic Tomato Paste, Beef Stock, Organic Yellow Onion, White Onion, Tomato Stock (garlic salt, organic tomato, annatto, garlic granules, cilantro), Sea Salt, Bell Peppers, Green Chiles, Paprika, Burger Spice (spices, salt, onion, garlic), Cilantro.

The ingredient list is clean and is what you’d add to make chili at home.
