Commercial Meal Review: DeliciOats

DeliciOats is a family-owned small business that easily brings overnight oats to backpackers.

They currently have 5 flavors in their lineup, and each flavor comes in a low-slung MRE-style mylar bag for easy prep and no dirty knuckles. You can make them at night and tuck them into your bear canister/Ursack, or make them with hot water in the morning if you like hot oatmeal—your choice.

I picked up their sampler pack, with one of each flavor, so I could try them all out.

I had a pop-up that said If I signed up for their newsletter, they would offer my first pouch free, plus free shipping on all orders forever, as long as they were $30 and over, so of course, I did that. If I can save money, why not? I see it like a loyalty program, and hey, if you don’t like their newsletter, you can always turn it off. They send you an email with the discount code to use. The 5-pack is also on Amazon for $39.95.

Each pouch contains 2 servings and retails for $8.99. The sampler pack is your best deal, and it sells for $39.95 (a discount from $44.95).

One of the reasons I was excited to try these oats is that they are sugar-free and are made with a monk fruit sweetener. So, one caveat: do NOT share these oats with your dog in camp, as erythritol is not safe for them. For us humans, by all means. The only sugar in the oats is from natural sources, such as dried fruit. And that is minimal.

The oats contain peanut flour to boost the protein. While our youngest has a severe peanut allergy, Kirk and I continue to eat peanuts. We just enjoy them when our son isn’t with us. However, I became concerned that because I use bamboo utensils in camp, I could not properly clean the wood so it wouldn’t cross-contaminate my utensils. So due to this, I sent the meals to a friend to try out and for her to post on her site/social media (The Hiker Mama).

However, if you can consume peanuts and tree nuts, these might be a good choice for you! Peanut flour is a good source of plant-based protein and fiber, so you stay full longer. The oats are gluten-free as well, and the line is vegan friendly.

I also appreciated the lower sodium in the oats. Even if you ate the entire bag, it is under 500 mg.

Nutrition stats for a single serving are:

270 and 280 calories, 7 grams fat, 220 to 230 mg sodium, 16 grams protein, 9 grams fiber, and 3 grams sugar (from natural sources, not added).

Red Raspberry

Cherry Chocolate

Sweet Strawberry

Apple Cinnamon

Blueberry Vanilla

All 5 flavors:

So I am sorry to say I couldn’t review the meals, but I look forward to Jennifer’s thoughts soon!
