Food Review: uBu Hiker’s Hummus

Another win at the social media ad algorithm was seeing an ad for uBu Hiker’s Hummus this past month. I clicked on the ad and saw a “starter pack” featuring four of their flavors.

The company has six flavors in total, though their Roasted Garlic was out of stock, and the starter pack leaves out the Jalapeno & Corn flavor (and man, did that sound good!).. The Starter Pack has Everything Bagel, Chipotle, Cilantro Lime, and Thai Basil. The 4-pack is $18.00; all flavors come in a 2-serving resealable pouch. It is a 2-person snack size, 1 person if eating as a meal. If using on wraps, with other ingredients added, it will serve 2.

If you look on the bottom pleat of the mylar-lined pouches, they contain a message—whether about building a bat box, a bench, or how to reuse the bags—so be sure to look!

The company is run by a Wisconsin couple trying to build a sustainable company.

My middle son is a hummus snob. This teen? He is picky with hummus. So, for this review, his palate was needed. We paired it with warmed naan bread for dipping.

The Hummus:

First, 5 of the 6 flavors are sesame-free. Sesame was recently finally recognized as a growing allergen in the United States, and nearly all hummus sold contains it, often in the form of tahini (sesame seeds ground into a pourable paste that looks similar to peanut butter). The Everything Bagel contains sesame, but if you’ve used the seasoning blend, sesame feeds are the main ingredient. But remember to avoid the Everything Bagel flavor!

Because the hummus is freeze-dried after making it, they don’t need to add in preservatves. Hummus buys “fresh” food in the grocery store and always contains preservatives to keep it fresh.

Everything Bagel:

At 45 calories per serving, it is the highest count of the four flavors. 2 grams fiber, 2 grams protein and 360 mg sodium.

Of the 4 flavors, this was my favorite. Very nicely flavored.

Chipotle:

40 calories, 210 mg sodium, 2 grams fiber, and 2 grams protein.

Good flavor, afterburner of heat.

Cilantro Lime:

30 calories, 1 gram fiber, 2 grams protein, and 310 mg sodium.

I worried how cilantro it would be, but no worries, it is lime central.

Thai Basil:

30 calories, 1 gram fiber, 2 grams protein, and 310 mg sodium.

It is pleasant and has a milder flavor.

The Takeaway:

All the flavors were pleasant. I would give 15 minutes for rehydration, even though how long isn’t mentioned on the packaging. Be sure to add the water slowly and stir well so you get all the powder mixed in. Its rustic texture is not commercial smooth like the tubs sold in grocery stores.

Both Walker and I enjoyed the flavors. He found the Chopolte a bit too spicy but polished off his share of the other three flavors.

For having on hand, when the desire for hummus happens, it’s a great pantry staple. Or to carry while traveling, it’s just enough with no waste.

But for me, the biggest was no preservatives. I don’t care for most commercial hummus because the preservatives give it a sharp flavor. An unpleasant flavor. The uBu Hummus doesn’t have that, so a huge win.
