First Day Hike: Sword Ferns & Alders

Did you get out today for First Day Hike?

We had mostly dry weather for New Years Day, we decided to keep it very local, just near our home on Whidbey Island.

The green of winter in the PNW.

We visited the Trillium Community Forest, and walked a few trails 👣, till our hands were good and cold.

Berries still brightening the forest.
How judgy…

Nah, I get it. This community forest was once nothing but logged land, full of steep logging roads. There’s an old one behind the sign.

As we looped back, a newly fallen tree gave us an arch to walk under.

No real sun today.

But yet, even in a low UV Index day, the green shines thru brightly, making the day more cheerful.

With our so far non-cold winter, even the fungi is still happening. If one looked low, pops of color were all over.

There is something about First Day Hikes. For setting the mood for the coming year!

Here is to a 2025 of exploring!
