Gear Review: Extremus Rechargeable Electric Lighter

Last year, Kirk picked me up an Extremus Rechargeable Electric Lighter on a sale, which he charged and gave to me to put into my outdoor kitchen gear. I then promptly forgot about it.

Yesterday, I was out working on meals when I saw the lighter in one of my bags. I thought about it and that I had never used it. To my shock, it was still fully charged, even over a year later.

It looks like a modern Zippo lighter. This is the “Flash” option if you click on the color/style choice on Amazon. They don’t have the Flash Black anymore but have many other colors (including four of the Flash). The price varies by the color, and some have percent-off coupons you can click on. But generally, the price is $9 to $16. Most are Prime for shipping.

There is a clasp on the right side that locks the lid to the body, pop that up and you can press the button for the lid to open.

The power button is on the top. Press it, and in the dark, you will see it light up. It makes a light-clicking sound as well. In daylight, you might not see the color change, but it is working.

It lights camp stoves quickly.

This black button on the side activates the flashlight. Click on and off to change the settings to strobe, high, and low light.

The portal for charging using the included USB cord. It also has a clip that goes into your pocket.

The lighter is windproof (think of how hard it can be to use a lighter in many situations, especially when your hands are cold). It is also rated as waterproof if the lid is sealed.

One thing about the lighter is that you can recharge it on the go, be it in your vehicle or using a solar charger. Carrying a solar charger isn’t uncommon these days on long hikes, as so many hikers want to use their phones. It’s a quick charge.

There are many color options (and various prices) on Amazon.
