A newer company on the market, Trail Goods Company, is from Colorado and offers four innovative meal choices. We picked up two to try out.
It is $16.99 for a 2-serving bag.
The sodium is a bit high for my taste. But if you split it as an actual 2-person meal, it isn’t bad.
That said, it doesn’t taste salty.
When you open a bag and it has real ingredients, not just mushed-up pieces, it is a good thing. The dry mix has a great aroma.
It calls for 1¼ cups boiled water.
I let the meal sit for 15 minutes, and then stirred it well.
The noodles are what you would expect – and remind me of Chow Mein noodles that can be used instead of ramen in meals. The bonus is that this type of noodle stays firm and has a bite. They don’t get soggy/mushy. For me, the noodles won me over. I also liked that while it has sauce, it isn’t a soup. They got this right.
It has great flavor – and a hint of heat/spice. So… for me, the spice was perfect. Not too hot, and not boring. If, however, you think Mountain House Sausage Gravy is “spicy” from black pepper, this will be too much for you.
I’d recommend the meal. Unless spicy is your adversary 😉
A meal that needs to be done in the backcountry is definitely Loco Moco. It’s the Hawaiian spin on a Great Depression-era staple. It’s carb-loaded, protein-rich, and a bit salty, which, for the trail, is pretty close to heaven as you can get.

What shocked me was seeing the sodium level on this meal. Traditionally, Moco Loco can be a salt lick because the commercial gravy drowns it. This is within my sodium preferences, even for the whole bag.
Lots of tasty mushrooms in it. Plenty of beef and egg, too.

Our oldest son really enjoyed this meal. I had a portion, and the texture is good. If you like rice casseroles, you would enjoy it!
Not salty; good mix of flavors. It is comfort food in a bowl (or bag).
It was a different meal – and it points out that more meals need to be like this. Modern takes on food, not just the typical meals hikers/hunters/campers buy, because it is all that is offered.
We recommend it.
