Commercial Meal Review: Mt. House Cheesy Pepperoni Pizza Bowl

Mountain House has brought a couple of new meals to market in recent months.

Cheesy Pepperoni Pizza Bowl is one of them, priced at $11.99.

As is typical with Mountain House, the 2-serving suggestion is just that. The protein listed on the front is per pouch, not per serving. It doesn’t make a lot for portion size. Most men, and many women, would need almost the whole pouch to feel full.

The hardest part is getting over it visually. It’s something I cannot get past with Mountain House, and haven’t, for the past 25 years. It’s always somewhere between soup and gruel in terms of texture. In contrast, most newer companies go for a more pilaf-like texture in their meals, so it looks like something you might have made at home. Recognizable meat and vegetables.

I honestly didn’t realize the “bits” in the meal were crust bites. You can see it in the above photo. It is the paler lumps.

The meal itself is not bad. The flavor is fine, the aroma works. It’s again the “Mountain House Slop In A Bag” that I cannot work easily with. I need something to chew, not just swallow. My oldest son liked it and finished the bag off. He said it ranked flavor-wise as if you pureed Domino’s Pizza.

There is a target audience for the meal, but it just isn’t me.

Nutritional Stats for the whole bag:

740 calories, 28 grams of protein, 1940 mg of sodium, 40 grams of fat, 6 grams of fiber, 64 grams of carbs.

Ease of prep:

It only needs boiling water and 9 minutes of sitting time. Stir very well, get into the corners to get the powder —essential for anything tomato-based. I stirred it again at 9 minutes and gave it another 5 minutes. Being tomato-based, use a dark-colored or metal spoon, as light-colored ones will get stained.
