RV Camping Meals: The DG Market Special Plate

Let’s say you are out camping in your RV or trailer – and even car camping – and do so much during the day that suddenly the meal you had prepped at home (a freeze-dried recipe) isn’t what you want. But then you realize there might be a solution, even out in the middle of rural. You passed a DG Market on the way in! The Dollar Holler is there to save your taste buds….

What’s a DG Market? It’s a newer concept from Dollar General, where they have larger stores that resemble mini grocery stores. They sell a variety of fresh produce, meat, dairy products, and more, alongside the typical dollar holler items. Had I wanted to change my mind beforehand, we’d have had to drive quite a few miles back to civilization to find a grocery store. I have seen the DG stores in both Maryland and West Virginia. It was clean, well-stocked with brand-name items, and I was able to pick up fresh fruit as well. And a new broom for our trailer….very convenient. All at good prices.

The One-Pot Alfredo Dish

Ingredients:

  • 14-ounce package turkey sausage or regular kelbasa sausage (skinless), cut into thin coins
  • 15-17 ounce jar Alfredo sauce, any flavor
  • 15-ounce can sweet corn, drained
  • 7-ounce package of precooked Barilla pasta
  • Liberal amounts of shelf-stable Parmesan cheese

Directions:

Slice the sausage into thin coins. Add to a 2-liter pot, preferably non-stick/wide, and heat over a medium flame, stirring often, till the sausage coins are turning golden and smell good. Add a bit of olive oil if concerned about burning. Usually, it’s fatty enough not to have to worry.

Add in the Alfredo sauce, drained corn, and pasta. Stir until well mixed and let heat through, stirring as needed.

Serve topped with as much cheese as you see fit.

Servees 2.
