Food Finds: Nissin Cup Noodles Curry and Original

I’d seen photos of the Cup Noodles Curry, but I hadn’t seen them in the wild till this week.

The Weis Supermarket chain carries a couple of the “Japan orginals” in the Asian section, so I picked up two flavors to try out. They didn’t have the Seafood flavor.

There’s nothing much redeeming about Cup Noodles – they are ultra processed, salty, and full of really low quality ingredients. But there’s also something so comforting about them.

Curry flavor.
Prepped.

When I make Cup Noodles I often let them sit for 10 minutes, after adding boiled water. The noodles continue to absorb water, and plump up.

I also drain the noodles, after stirring them well, eating them like pasta.

The curry is typical of Japanese curry, which is neither spicy, hot, or overpowering. It’s very mild. The chunks in the noodles… they have a potato texture, but I’m not sure what exactly they are. Let’s not question it too deeply. It claims to have pork sausage, potato, and carrots.

There are peanuts in this one as an FYI.

I liked the noodles. It was different than most of the Cup Noodles out there. At 360 calories, it’ll fuel you on sheer carbs.

Orginal flavor.
Prepped.

This really reminded me of Cup Noodles when I was a kid. The dried shrimp especially. It has the taste of how it used to be.

“Topped with large shrimp, pork crumbles, scrambled egg and green onion”. The shrimp are indeed bigger than the US Shrimp Cup Noodles.

Prepared my favorite way, of 10 minute sit time and drained, it’s a big bowl of noodles. It has 310 calories.

Both are easy to prep, for a simple meal on the trail. Find in well stocked stores and online. I paid $2.29 for each one.
