Last year, I came across Choc Zero sugar-free products at a local keto food store. After liking their sugar-free latte syrups, I ended up on their website and ordered a bunch of items to try out. One thing I saw was freeze-dried S’mallows, their sugar-free marshmallows. And you might wonder….what does that have to do with trail food?
A lot. If you are on a low-sugar, sugar-free, or keto diet and really crave something fun, this is the answer.
And these marshmallows are naturally dyed in pretty pastel shades and vanilla flavored.
They taste great as a sweet snack, added to gorp/trail mix, or topping hot cocoa or mocha in the backcountry. Pile them on high!

The marshmallows come in 4-ounce tubs (not small containers!) and a jumbo 18-ounce container. Freeze-dried food is light, so 4 ounces is a lot.
The 4-ounce container is $5.99; the 18-ounce is $19.99.
Ingredients:
Non-GMO resistant dextrin, fructooligosaccharide, gelatin, natural vanilla flavor, monkfruit extract, natural food coloring.
They are not vegan, but that isn’t an issue for me. I just like to remind people that marshmallows, in general, are not vegan. The gelatin is from cow, not pig.

At first, I almost ordered the big tub, but then I wasn’t sure if I’d like them. I know my kids would have eaten them all now. Lesson learned: Next time, get the big tub.
They also carry regular soft marshmallows as well, in mini and regular size.
And I will add: Choc Zero products don’t bother my stomach. Some sugar-free items can cause GI issues or make you gassy. These, for me, do not do that. I eat them in moderation, just enough to cure my sweet tooth, but no distress later. They also don’t have an aftertaste, which too often sugar-free items can have due to their sweeteners. There is also no cooling effect in the mouth.
So, for me? It’s a total win.
