One of the original FBC recipes from when TrailCooking was known as FreezerBagCooking.com, this is a couscous recipe that is Freezer Bag Cooking friendly.
Couscous is “instant” pasta, requiring no cooking of it. Just add hot water and wait a bit, and you have a hearty meal.
When this recipe was written Lipton Soup was still selling tomato soup packets in the US. They discontinued it, but it is still sold in the UK and other regions, and can be sourced on Amazon. I have included a link in the recipe for it.

Italian Chicken Pilaf
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup couscous
- ¼ cup dried vegetable blend
- 3 Tbsp tomato soup dry mix (1 packet)
- 1 Tbsp diced dried onion
- ¼ tsp dried garlic
- ¼ tsp Italian herb blend
Also Take:
- 1 can 3 to 5-ounce chicken, with pop top
- 1 Tbsp or 1 packet olive oil
Instructions:
Pack the dry ingredients in a quart freezer or sandwich bag. Place the chicken with the bag.
FBC method:
Place the quart freezer bag into a FBC Cozy. Add chicken with broth, oil and 1 cup boiled water. Stir well, seal tightly, and put in a cozy for 15 minutes.
Mug method:
Add chicken with broth, oil and 1 cup boiling water to the dry ingredients in the insulated mug. Stir well, seal tightly, and let sit for 15 minutes.
One Pot Method:
Add 1 cup water, chicken with broth and oil to a small pot. Bring to a boil, add in the dry ingredients, stirring well. Cover tightly and take off stove. Let sit for 15 minutes. In cool temperatures or at high altitude, use a pot cozy to insulate.
Serves 1.
If desired, sprinkle on 1 to 2 Tablespoons of shelf stable Parmesan cheese after stirring, before eating.
