With an overcast morning, we drove to Maryland so my brother could see part of the Antietam Battlefield, located outside of Sharpsburg, MD. We are just a bit over 9 miles away, yet in a different state. It’s an easy drive over Rumsey Bridge from Shepherdstown, WV. Just remember kids, don’t speed in Maryland – they love their cameras.
Bloody Lane is easily accessible, with a simple turn off of Sharpsburg Pike (US 65) onto Bloody Lane. It is just before you turn into the main complex, where the visitor center is.
The first parking area is a great starting point. There is also more parking just up the road at the Observation Tower.

The history is deep here.

By this sign, walk down the steps to the Sunken Road.

Looking uphill to the observation tower.

The corn was recently harvested here.

Turn to the left to walk down Bloody Lane and into the history of the Civil War.

Roulette Lane curves and heads to the old farm.

Rounding the first curve.

Walking up Bloody Lane.

More monuments.

As we came up the road, you could almost feel how the troops felt so long ago.
Trails take off here, wandering across the high ground and visiting other monuments. There are many loops one can do. We went out towards the memorial in the center.

The 5th Maryland Volunteer Infantry, Company A & I Monument, at the top of the high ground.

Looking to the Blue Ridge Mountains from the monument. Windswept primal beauty.

From the high ground, looking down at the sunken road.
Wander where you will. Stop and just listen. It’s a powerful place to hike.
