I don’t think I have ever reviewed a single commercial meal before and said out loud “This meal could use salt”. This might be possibly the lowest sodium meal I have encountered. That is a good thing because you can add salt but not remove it.
Backpacker’s Pantry Cinnamon Apple Oats, a breakfast choice. It’s full of modern ingredients, such as quinoa and hemp seeds to fuel your morning. Amazon carries it in 6 packs, at $32.94 (making each pouch $5.49 – which is a bit less than the individual bag of $6.99 )
The bag is a single serving, 3.2 ounces dry. It retails for $6.99, which makes it an affordable trail meal. The mylar packaging is low, so easy to eat out of, with no food covered knuckles.
Nutritional Information:
340 calories, 8 grams, fat, 170 mg sodium, 7 grams fiber, 11 grams protein and 16 grams sugar (half of which is added in).
Ingredient List:
Whole Grain Oats, Preooked Tri-Color Quinoa (White Quinoa, Red Quinoa, Black Quinoa), Freeze-Dried Apple, Cane Sugar, Hulled Hemp Seed, Cinnamon, Sea Salt.
It’s a simple meal. Real ingredients.
The apples are cube-sized, which means they rehydrate quickly. When the packaging is opened, the smell is nice. No weird, off-smelling that some commercial meals have. No artificial smell, which for me goes far.
The breakfast is easy to prep. Just open, discard the desiccant packet, and add in 1 cup of boiled water. Stir well, seal, and let sit for 5 minutes. Or how long you want to.
Stir again, and enjoy.
I would suggest to have a pinch of sea salt to add. It would pop the apples perfectly. I don’t normally like quinoa overall in meals, but in these oats it works. The quinoa is firm and not mushy. It adds a texture to the soft oats.
