The desire to DIY is strong in hikers. To make our gear has been a thing as long as I have been hiking. It’s started many a cottage gear shop in the ultralight hiking world.
I am not here to say you should make this, but rather that you can make things you had not thought you could. It’s more about finding focus and creating. It’s dipping into the creativity of the DIY world.
If you want to get crazy, you could make a spoon out of a zip tie and duct tape:
That didn’t taste great, but it worked in a pinch…..
Another observation I have found to be truthful is that many with “nerdy” hobbies are also hikers. I wouldn’t hesitate to say that some of my readers here have a 3D printer in their home and have made many D&D items on it. We have a 3D printer that Kirk runs quite often (and has also had a couple of other brands over the years). He’s got no shame in his “nerdy” hobbies, for sure.
The file for this long-handle spoon can be found at Thingiverse.
Kirk ran it for fun, to see what it would look like.
It was not the prettiest piece, but it would work. Would I use it? Probably not.
Sometimes, it’s about being able to make items rather than using them. It’s that feeling of satisfaction using one’s mind to dream up outdoor gear.
